Lighting Guide

Pendant lights over a dining table

  • Choose a pendant about half to two-thirds the width of the table.
  • Hang it 75–90 cm above the table top.
  • For long tables, use two or three pendants spaced 60–75 cm apart.

Pendants over a kitchen island

  • Hang 75–90 cm above the worktop.
  • Leave about 15 cm between the end pendant and the edge of the island.

Chandeliers and ceiling lights

  • Room size guide: add the room's length and width in metres, then multiply by 10. The result is a good chandelier diameter in centimetres. For example, a 4 m × 5 m room suits a chandelier of about 90 cm.
  • Keep at least 2.1 m clearance from the floor in walkways.
  • For ceilings under 2.4 m, choose flush or semi-flush ceiling lights.

Wall lights

  • Mount wall lights 150–170 cm from the floor.
  • On either side of a mirror, space them 75–100 cm apart.
  • Bedside wall lights work well at 120–150 cm, about 15 cm out from the bed edge.

Bathrooms

Lights in bathrooms must have a suitable IP rating for their zone. IP44 is the usual minimum near basins. Always ask a qualified electrician.
